Annie’s parents were both card players and thanks to this, she became interested in cards at an early age. She attended St Paul’s School, and after matriculating went to Columbia University, graduating with a degree in English and Psychology. Afterwards, she pursued a Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, and thanks to her studies she was given a National Science Foundation fellowship.

However, she then decided to stop pursuing a career in the academia, and at the age of 22, Duke started playing Texas hold’em poker.
Annie was encouraged by her brother to play professionally, and she had a successful year which led to the 1994 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas; she won $70,000 during her first month, and decided to move to Las Vegas. She continued to play throughout the 1990s, and in the year 2000 she already had 16 money finishes at WSOP events.

Annie Duke had become a high profile poker player. In 2000 she placed 10th out of 512 players, despite being nine months pregnant. In 2004, she received a WSOP gold bracelet, and would then become the top female money winner in WSOP, earning a total of $650,000, including winning the WSOP Tournament of Champions, beating her brother and other world championship winners for the $2 million prize. In 2010 she won the National Heads-Up Poker Championship, netting $500,000. She has won a total of $4.27 million in live tournaments, boosting her net worth significantly.

Aside from playing tournaments, she promotes online gambling and its regulation as part of the Poker Players Alliance. She’s also taught at the WSOP Poker School, including celebrities such as Ben Affleck, who would go on to win the 2004 California State Poker Championship.

She also founded the Epic Poker League, and would also write numerous poker strategy books, among them “Decide to Play Great Poker” and “No Middle Zone”. She has also released an instructional DVD series entitled “Annie Duke’s Advanced Texas Hold’em Secrets: How to Beat the Big Boys”. She also wrote an autobiography entitled “Annie Duke: How I Raised, Folded, Bluffed, Flirted, Cursed, and Won Millions at the World Series of Poker” – all have contributed to her net worth.
