James is of mixed ancestry; his mother, Elizabeth Mary is English, while his father is of Russian-Jewish descent – and the original family name is Remarman.

His professional career began with a small role in the drama “On the Yard” in 1978, however, in the following year came his big break as Ajax in the action thriller “The Warriors”, directed by Walter Hill. In 1980 he appeared next to Al Pacino, Paul Sorvino and Karen Allen in “Cruising”, and also had a role in the Walter Hill`s western “The Long Riders”, with David Carradine, Stacy Keach and Dennis Quaid. James continued successfully in the early ‘80s with roles in “Windwalker” (1980), “48 Hrs.” (1982) with Nick Nolte, Eddie Murphy and Annette O`Toole”, then in the Oscar-nominated crime drama “The Cotton Club” (1984) directed by Francis Ford Copola, and starring Richard Gere, Gregory Hines and Diane Lane. In 1986 he starred in Michael Chapman`s adventure “The Clan of the Cave Bear” with Daryl Hannah and Pamela Reed, and in 1989 featured in Gus Van Sant`s “Drugstore Cowboy”, with Matt Dillon and Kelly Lynch. Her net worth was rising sreadily.

James started the ‘90s with the role of Wolfgang Reiger in the television film “Kojak: None So Blind” (1990), and during the decade appeared in about 30 films, some of which include “White Fang” (1991) with Ethan Hawke, “Wedlock” (1991), “Blink” (1993), a lead role in the crime drama “Confessions of a Hitman” (1994), then in the comedy “Renaissance Man” (1994) starring Danny DeVito, “Boys on the Side” (1995) starring Whoopi Goldberg and Drew Barrymore, “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation” (1997) as Rayden next to Robin Shou and Talisa Soto, and “Rites of Passage” (1999), all of which increased his net worth and cemented his name on the Hollywood map.

Moving into the 2000s, James accepted the role of Tiny Bellows in the TV series “The Huntress” (2000-2001), while also appearing in Robert Zemeckis` horror “What Lies Beneath”, next to Michelle Pfeiffer and Katharine Towne, before in 2002 appearing in several episodes of the TV series “Third Watch” (2002), and from 2001 until 2004 featuring in 12 episodes of the highly popular TV romantic comedy series “Sex and the City” as Richard, the on-off boyfriend of one of the lead characters Samantha Fox. He returned to big screen in 2003 with a role in the thriller “Fear X”, and continued with a role in “2 Fast 2 Furious”, starring Paul Walker. In 2004 he featured in comedy “The Girl Next Door”, and in 2006 was selected for the role of Harry Morgan in the TV series “Dexter”, appearing in 96 episodes until the series end in 2013, which certainly added a considerable amount to James` net worth. In 2014 he portrayed John Luther in the film “Persecuted”, and also starred in Greg Carter`s “Lap Dance”, with Briana Evigan and Carmen Electra.

1 Often plays supporting villains
2 Deep gravelly commanding voice
# Quote
1 I was really thrilled and honored and wanted to do the best job I could. But afterwards, I started getting a lot of bad guy offers and became concerned about being typecast. I did not want to be seen as that kind of guy all the time because a lot of those roles are not well written. They’re there merely to drive the action and give the protagonist something to do. So it becomes incredibly repetitive and boring. (On 48 Hours)
2 That’s why I take on a variety of roles. I’ve played everything from a gay dancer in Cruising (1980) to Dutch Schultz in The Cotton Club (1984). James Remar is a student of life. I’m expressing myself by acting. I’m learning about myself and making a living. I hope to do much more of it, so I can contribute my share to the world.
3 Any good actor is a character actor.
# Fact
1 His family surname was originally “Remarman”. His paternal grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants, while his mother was English.
2 Attended Newton North High School.
3 Grew up in Newton, Mass. Attended John Ward Elementary School,.
4 Was the voice in the 2009-2010 Lexus car commercials.
5 He was given an honorary name “Standing 20” during the filming of Windwalker (1980) by the Cheyenne.
6 He has worked 4 times with actor Mario Van Peebles in the movies: The Cotton Club (1984), Blowback (2000), Guardian (2001) and Sharpshooter (2007).
7 He enjoys photography, scuba diving, and golf in his spare time.
8 Decided to become an actor at the age of seven years old after seeing the movie Spartacus (1960).
9 Most of Remar’s characters are vicious and cocky, if not evil; in real life, however, he is a proud father and a loving husband.
10 The actress who handcuffed him to that park bench in The Warriors (1979) was Mercedes Ruehl, also in her second film. One of Reuhl’s friends, who was a Washington Post Reporter, wrote about seeing the film and being disappointed at her friend’s harsh role.
11 Probably best known for the recurring TV role of “Richard,” the compulsively philandering jet-set boyfriend of Kim Cattrall, in Sex and the City (1998).
12 Gained a minor cult following after playing “Ajax” in The Warriors (1979).
13 Made an impressive Broadway debut playing Richard Gere‘s lover in “Bent” in 1979.
14 Actor-trained at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse.
15 Was originally cast as “Hicks” in Aliens (1986), but had to be replaced early into filming. He can be seen from the back as the marines walk along a corridor, but only because the in-camera miniature of the set had been junked, and too expensive to re-shoot.
